About

The Virginia Aviation Council is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation made up of representatives of various individual, statewide and national aviation organizations and interests.

On April 27, 1996, Ken Wiegand, then Director of the Virginia Department of Aviation, suggested that the EAA chapters of Virginia consider forming a state-wide organization for promoting aerospace education.  This purpose continues to today.  We were incorporated on Oct. 16, 1996 and were recognized as the official Virginia Fly-In Organization by EAA.  The event continues today but no longer in association with the EAA.

The Articles of Incorporation provide for an annual fly-in/symposium to be one of the methods that the Council would use in furthering aerospace education.   Our 1st Virginia Fly-In was held at Petersburg/Dinwiddie Municipal Airport on June 28-29, 1997.  In 2017, this event (now known as the Virginia Festival of Flight) took place on October, 7, 2017, in conjunction with the Suffolk Peanut Festival.

Other out of the box aviation activities are always being planned by the Council and we regularly look for partnership opportunities.
